Yad Sarah – Press release 9 March 2020

Due to the spread of the Coronavirus in Israel, Yad Sarah is establishing a new service – The Coronavirus Hotline.

Currently, there are approximately 70,000 Israeli citizens in quarantine in their homes, some in need of vital medical equipment such as oxygen cylinders, respiratory and orthopedic equipment, and more. This service is over and above the home hospitalization service that Yad Sarah runs and assists 20,000 families annually.

Due to the quarantine, they are not able to get the equipment they need, so Yad Sarah, the largest volunteer organization in Israel, is setting up a new and accessible service. It will provide an emergency service to people who need medical equipment but, because they are in quarantine, cannot leave their homes to borrow it from a Yad Sarah branch.

The equipment will be transported by a dedicated mobile unit of the organization, and volunteers wearing protective clothing will place the medical equipment outside the homes of those in quarantine.

The service is provided voluntarily, and requires a deposit for the equipment, which can be arranged by telephone through the Coronavirus Hotline.

The hotline will operate from 08:00 until 17:00, and the equipment will be supplied throughout the country within 24 hours.

In addition, Yad Sarah continues to operate and to supply all of its 116 branches throughout the country with necessary medical equipment.

The Coronavirus Hotline number:  +972-2-6444639.

Facing Israel’s Healthcare Crisis: Yad Sarah’s Role

With hospitals in Israel struggling with overcrowding, and a report from the Ministry of Health indicating that 44% of Israelis are frustrated by long waits and overwhelmed medical staff, Yad Sarah is uniquely positioned to address some of these issues by ensuring that options for home care make it possible for people to receive care at home.

shai_special_wheelchairTwo foundations — The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Rosenbojm-Komor Foundation — have supported projects that promote the availability of home care equipment in Israel’s periphery where the challenges facing communities in rural areas is particularly acute.  The foundations are also supporting the expansion of Yad Sarah’s dental clinic, reducing wait time for primary and specialist care in the Jerusalem clinic and expanding Yad Sarah’s mobile capacity, thereby bringing much needed dental care to the frail elderly at home.

As no relief is in sight from the government, private philanthropy has stepped up to help Yad Sarah, an NGO with a large network throughout Israel and the largest group of active volunteers in Israel, giving the organization unique flexibility to innovate, experiment and quickly fill gaps.

Tackling The Urban-Rural Health Care Divide: Times Of Israel Op-Ed

There are dramatic differences in health outcomes between those who live in most of central Israel and those on the country’s northern and southern periphery.  Addressing this disparity requires several solutions, including Yad Sarah’s “Home Hospital” program, recently introduced in Israel’s Southern periphery.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Leah-Palmer-helping-a-client-800Through Yad Sarah’s “Home Hospital” program, the organization lends out medical equipment from hospital beds and hoists to wheelchairs and oxygen tanks to, whenever possible, enable the elderly, injured and sick to receive care at home — not in a hospital.  By facilitating timelier discharges of patients, the program promises to reduce pressure on overwhelmed hospitals and ensure that beds are available for those in greatest need.
